Food hygiene ratings for other catering, explained
How are other catering given a food hygiene rating?
A catering premises is inspected by a local authority food safety officer, who scores hygiene practices, the condition of the premises, and confidence in management. Those scores combine into a single 0 to 5 rating, published by the Food Standards Agency.
What is a good hygiene rating for a catering premises?
A 5 is the top rating and means hygiene standards are very good. A 4 is good and a 3 is generally satisfactory. Anything at 2 or below means improvement is needed, and is the sort of result worth a second thought before you order.
How often are other catering inspected?
It depends on the risk. Higher-risk premises are visited more often, sometimes every six months, while lower-risk ones may go two years or more between inspections. The rating you see is from the most recent visit.
